Crater Lake National Park

Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States, the second deepest in North America, and the ninth deepest lake in the world.

Crater Lake is a caldera lake in the western United States, located in south-central Oregon. It is the main feature of Crater Lake National Park and is famous for its deep blue color and water clarity. The lake partly fills a nearly 2,148-foot deep caldera that was formed around 7,700 years ago by the collapse of the volcano Mount Mazama.

There are no rivers flowing into or out of the lake; the evaporation is compensated for by rain and snowfall at a rate such that the total amount of water is replaced every 250 years. At 1,943 feet, the lake is the deepest in the United States, and the seventh or ninth deepest in the world, depending on whether average or maximum depth is measured.

Visiting the Comic Art Museum

Comic books have their origins in 1700’s Japan and 1830’s Europe, and they were first popularized in the 1930’s in the United States.

The Cartoon Art Museum is a California art museum that specializes in the art of comics and cartoons. It is the only museum in the Western United States dedicated to the preservation and exhibition of all forms of cartoon art. The permanent collection features some 6,000 pieces, including original animation cels, comic book pages and early newspaper comic strips.

The Cartoon Art Museum’s latest exhibition celebrates the iconic hit franchise Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

The TMNT exhibition will include all of the original artwork from the historic first issue from 1984, other early covers and interior artwork from series creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird and their associates from Mirage Studios, storyboards and animation cells from the original 1980s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles television series and material from the popular TMNT Adventures comic book originally published by Archie Comics.

The Rise and Fall of Arcade Games

Today’s arcades have found a niche in games that use special controllers largely inaccessible to home users.

An arcade game (or coin-op) is a coin-operated entertainment machine, usually installed in public businesses, such as restaurants, bars, and particularly amusement arcades. Most arcade games are video games, pinball machines, electro-mechanical games, redemption games, and merchandisers (such as claw cranes).

The golden age of arcade video games lasted from the late 1970s to the mid-1990s. While arcade games were still relatively popular during the late 1990s, the entertainment medium saw a continuous decline in popularity in the Western hemisphere when home-based video game consoles made the transition from 2D graphics to 3D graphics. Despite this, arcades remain popular in many parts of Asia as late as the early 2010s.

Practical Botany for Gardeners

A beautifully designed book for gardeners. Over 3,000 botanical terms explained and explored.

Botany originated in prehistory as herbalism with the efforts of early humans to identify – and later cultivate – edible, medicinal and poisonous plants, making it one of the oldest branches of science. Medieval physic gardens, often attached to monasteries, contained plants of medical importance.

Botany originated in prehistory as herbalism with the efforts of early humans to identify and later cultivate edible, medicinal and poisonous plants, making it one of the oldest branches of science.

They were forerunners of the first botanical gardens attached to universities, founded from the 1540s onwards. One of the earliest was the Padua botanical garden. These gardens facilitated the academic study of plants. Efforts to catalogue and describe their collections were the beginnings of plant taxonomy, and led in 1753 to the binomial system of Carl Linnaeus that remains in use to this day.
